Compound Hydrometeorological Extremes: Drivers, Mechanisms and Methods

چکیده
Compound extremes pose immense challenges and hazards to communities, this is particularly true for compound hydrometeorological associated with deadly floods, surges, droughts, heat waves. To mitigate better adapt extremes, we need understand the state of knowledge such extremes. Here review current advances in understanding extremes: wave drought (hot-dry), stress extreme precipitation (hot-wet), cold-wet, cold-dry flooding. We focus on drivers these methods used investigate quantify their risk. Overall, hot-dry are tied subtropical highs, blocking atmospheric stagnation events, planetary patterns, which modulated by atmosphere-land feedbacks. Compared hot-wet events less examined literature most works focusing case studies. The cold-wet commonly snowfall cold frontal systems. Although have been found decrease, underlying mechanisms require further investigation. flooding encompasses storm surge high rainfall, sea level rise, riverine flooding, coastal there a growing risk future due changes intensity, precipitation, land-use-land-cover change. processes interactions numerical models complement statistical modeling dependence between components While global climate can simulate certain types high-resolution regional coupled land hydrological required variability project In terms previous studies empirical approach, event coincidence analysis, multivariate distribution, indicator quantile regression Markov Chain method dependence, greatly advancing science selection depends type interests relevant variables.

Studying the extremes: hydrometeorological investigation of a flood-causing rainstorm over Israel
Analysis of extreme hydrometeorological events is important for characterizing and better understanding the meteorological conditions that can generate severe rainstorms and the consequent catastrophic flooding. According to several studies (e.g., Alpert et al., 2004; Wittenberg et al., 2007), the occurrence of such extreme events is increasing over the eastern Mediterranean although total rain...
متن کاملBayesian Technique for the Selection of Probability Distributions for Frequency Analyses of Hydrometeorological Extremes
Frequency analysis of hydrometeorological extremes plays an important role in the design of hydraulic structures. A multitude of distributions have been employed for hydrological frequency analysis, and more than one distribution is often found to be adequate for frequency analysis. The current method for selecting the best fitted distributions are not so objective. Using different kinds of con...

One of the major interests in extreme-value statistics is to infer the tail properties of the distribution functions in the domain of attraction of an extreme-value distribution and to predict rare events. In recent years, much effort in developing new methodologies has been made by many researchers in this area so as to diminish the impact of the bias in the estimation and achieve some asympto...
متن کاملCompound extremes in a changing climate - a Markov Chain approach
There is no clear justification for the choice of the 6 box-regions and their size (6x6 14 grid points). Why they are representative of the PRUDENCE regions? Some min15 imal study about the spatial robustness of the Markov diagnostics should be pre16 sented. For example, does the results keep similar or change substantially when 17 contiguous boxes are considered? The ideal should be to present...
